Blue dome lighting - New standards in surface inspection

High-energy blue power LEDs for precision inspection

Group of four vicolux® Blue Vision dome lights

By combining blue lighting technology with customised lenses, surfaces can be examined with unprecedented resolution and depth of field. Even the blind spot of the camera aperture can be illuminated.

With the vicotar® BLUE vision series, Vision & Control has been dedicated to the inspection of surfaces with blue light for some time now, because the diffraction error is lowest in the visible spectral range around 450 nanometres. This means that surfaces can be inspected with very high resolution and maximum depth of field using lenses and lighting designed for this purpose. Two influencing variables that actually contradict each other.

High-energy blue power LEDs - now also in vicolux® dome lights.

A new chapter in terms of inspection accuracy and surface detection. Thanks to their short wavelength, the power LEDs generate high-energy light that precisely illuminates even the finest details and surface structures. Thanks to the shadow-free and very diffuse light distribution, even the smallest defects, cracks or scratches can be reliably detected. Even on highly reflective surfaces. This is extremely important wherever fault-free products are required. For example, in the pharmaceutical packaging industry when it comes to checking tablets in blister packs or inspecting products under transparent film.

Vision & Control GmbH offers the blue dome lights in two product series. In the Smart Light version as D-CLR-60x18-B450-P-SL with a light field diameter of 60 millimetres and an irradiance of 830 W/m² (3,700 W/m² in flash mode); and as D-CLR-84x24-B450-P-SL with a light field diameter of 84 millimetres and an irradiance of 670 W/m² (2,100 W/m² in flash mode). Both are controlled via the separate vicolux® DLC3005 lighting controller. This is available for wall or top-hat rail mounting (variant "R").

The lighting controller is already integrated in the 24-volt versions of the SFD series. SFD30/9-B470-P/24V has a light field diameter of 61 millimetres, the irradiance at a working distance of five millimetres is 208 W/m², corresponding to 19,500 Lx illuminance. SFD42/12-B470-P/24V has a light field diameter of 85 millimetres, the irradiance at a working distance of five millimetres is 149 W/m², corresponding to 14,000 Lx illuminance.

Whether with or without an integrated controller, both versions are compatible in terms of design and can also be easily integrated into existing systems.

No more blind spots

One challenge in surface inspection is the dark area in the centre of the image created by the opening for the camera. With a beam splitter from the STE series, the vicolux® dome lights can also be extended with coaxial lighting to create a "full dome". This also illuminates the dark area of the camera view in the centre of the image. The almost shadow-free illumination is ideal for levelling out unevenness on surfaces and checking prints without errors.
