Endowed professorial chair at Technische Universität Ilmenau

As one of the companies who set up the professorial chair "Industrial Image Processing" at Technische Universität Ilmenau, Vision & Control GmbH has underlined the close ties between practice and research.

The professorial chair "Industrial Image Processing" at Technische Universität Ilmenau was established in the winter semester of 2014/15. Its objective is to further the interdisciplinary training of engineers.

The signing of the sponsorship agreement for the endowed professorial chair laid the foundations for an expansion of joint research projects and for shared efforts to promote the next generation of young skilled workers.

The decision to sponsor this position resulted from the close and productive relationship that has already been in place with Technische Universität Ilmenau for many years. The aim is to cover the key area of industrial image processing in research and teaching and to thus further enrich the university location. In addition, Vision & Control also hopes that this involvement will help to secure its own intake of young skilled workers.

As one of the companies who set up the professorial chair, Vision & Control recognized early on that the demand for well-trained engineers in this field will further rise with increasing automation and digitalization.

Industrial image processing is an interdisciplinary science in which issues relating to optics, electronics, light technology and computer science all play a role. This is why the university degree course Optical System Technology/Optronics – which is supported by the specialist department – was introduced at Technische Universität Ilmenau.

The specialist department Quality Assurance and Industrial Image Processing, which is the department to which the endowed professorial chair is affiliated, carries out industrial fundamental research and applied research in industrial image processing. Work is performed to develop methods, algorithms and systems technology solutions for image capture, image processing and image analysis for applications in particular in the fields of quality assurance and process control in production, robotics, food and food products industry, construction industry, medical technology and safety technology.

Professor Notni, who currently holds this endowed chair, is still the head of the Optical Systems department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena.
