A 100% quality check of punched metal parts (cogwheels) is performed in a testing cell for the automotive industry. The testing cell is subsequently integrated into the line. A typical part-conveying situation: The part lies on a dirty, dark conveyer belt. In these hardly ideal conditions, various lighting techniques are needed to improve image quality.

 

Task:

 

  • Presence of chad between the cogs
  • Presence of grits in the cogs and the square geometry
  • Geometrically offsetting the square against the external teeth
  • Contact-free monitoring of cap-nut geometries
    Presence of the internal thread
  • Adequate depth of thread, independently of the runout

 

Problem:

 

Varying surface quality of the parts: shiny, matt, discoloured.

Adjustment to different parts.

 

Solution:

 

The answer for this part is dark-field lighting. It accentuates edges and makes contours easily visible, even against dark backgrounds.
